About
In a seminal 2016 essay on the need to encourage imagination and creativity in education, engineer and award-winning writer Wole Talabi raises a question about a rarely discussed underdevelopment in Africa: “Where is the critical science fiction eco-system of writers, scientists, directors, engineers, editors, and futurists interacting with and learning from each other?” This project is a small step towards building such infrastructure.
Applied African SF is a project funded by Imperial College and Anglia Ruskin University, in collaboration with the University of Nairobi, the African Speculative Fiction Society, BSFA Vector, the International Black Speculative Writing Festival, and BRAID Sustainable AI Futures. Applied African SF is creating resources for using African speculative cultures across environmental education, policy, and innovation.
